For the new release of Katharina Katz’s novel *Say it with a Love Song*, published by Gräfe und Unzer, I had the privilege of taking on a very special task: designing the inside flap of the book with a custom illustration of the main characters.
An atmospheric setting rendered in vivid language
The focus of the work was on the visual interpretation of the characters and their story, set against the atmospheric backdrop of Brighton, England. The coastal town, with its distinctive light, its blend of nostalgia and vibrancy, and its proximity to the sea, provided the perfect setting for translating the emotional world of the novel into visual language.
For me, this project represented a new and exciting area of work, as the illustration was directly linked to a literary narrative, and the task was to bring together the atmosphere, characters, and mood in a single visual composition. I particularly enjoyed the process of bringing the characters to life visually and artistically accompanying their story.
The result is an illustration that not only complements the novel but also captures its emotional depth and conveys it visually—serving as a gentle introduction to the story that bridges the gap between the book’s cover and the imagination.
